Lighthouse, Camera, Action!
The new Great Lighthouses of Ireland Film Bursary is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), in partnership with Tourism Northern Ireland and the Department for Communities Historic Environment Division to mark the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 (EYCH).
Supporting Great Lighthouses of Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and Tourism Ireland‘s national and international digital marketing campaigns, we’re looking for four talented Northern Irish filmmakers to focus their lens on the North’s stunning lighthouses.
Through the Great Lighthouses of Ireland Film Bursary, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and supported by Tourism Northern Ireland, we’re seeking submissions from filmmakers in Northern Ireland to create a short film (3 mins max) about some of the area’s captivating lighthouses/lighthouse attractions.
The three lighthouses covered under the bursary are Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim; Blackhead, Co. Antrim; St John’s Point, Co. Down; as well as The Great Light optic in Belfast.
Under the overall theme of Legends of the Lighthouse, filmmakers simply have their pick of creative inspiration. From the area’s rich coastal communities and lightkeeping families, to its unique maritime, industrial and marine heritage; the coast’s abundant wildlife, birdlife and sealife, not to mention the unforgettable joy of an actual lighthouse stay – there’s something to get the camera rolling for all manner of filmmaker.
Submissions will be marked on:
- Creativity and suitability of the creative idea to showcase the lighthouse in the context of the location’s marine heritage, cultural influences and unique stories, 40%
- Ability to attract attention and interest of Northern Ireland’s target markets and visitor profile, 10%
- Skills, equipment and previous work, 20%
- Ability to fit the idea to the budget, 20%
- Ability to deliver the film on time, 10%
A suite of mentoring supports will be provided to support the successful applicants deliver the best digital story that will attract the attention of both overseas and domestic visitors to Northern Ireland.
Funding of up to £3,000 is available per lighthouse destination. Great Lighthouses of Ireland will select four films to fund from the submissions. Ideas for all locations may be submitted. Submissions will be marked in favour of talent and creativity.
